Alcatraz Island is open daily except on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Ferry service and tours run year-round, weather permitting.
The first ferry usually departs from Pier 33 around 8:45am, though schedules may vary slightly by season. Early morning slots tend to be less crowded.
The last ferry depends on your tour type:
• For day tours, the final return ferry typically leaves the island around 4:25pm–6:30pm, depending on the season.
• For the night tour, you’ll return on a specific scheduled ferry, usually between 7:45pm–9:30pm.
Missing the last ferry is rare—but not advised. You must leave on the assigned ferry, and there’s no overnight access. Park rangers will assist, but options are limited, and penalties may apply.
Most night tours conclude with return ferries departing between 8:45pm and 9:30pm. The full experience, including ferry time, takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled ferry time. Boarding closes promptly, and late arrivals may not be allowed to join another tour.
It depends on the experience you’re looking for:
• Day tours offer full island access, flexibility, and better views of the Bay.
• Night tours are more intimate and atmospheric, with special programs and access to off-limits areas—but come with fixed schedules and reduced daylight.
